Novella Reviews: Night of Cake & Puppets, Destroy Me, and The Transfer

Night of Cake and Puppets
Author: Laini Taylor
Publisher: Little Brown Books
Publication Date: November 26, 2013

Review:
This novella follows Karou's best friend Zuzana as she tries to win "Violin Boy" Mik's heart with a scavenger hunt and a few magical wishes.

I loved the frantic phone calls between Karous and Zuzana even though Karou wasn't a huge part of the story it was nice to see her small cameos and see how deep the friendship between the two girls runs.

Overall, this is a super cute novella that is very well written (as everything by Laini Taylor usually is) and while it is not necessary to the overall storyline it is one I wouldn't skip. I really enjoyed seeing more of Zuzana and Mik!

Destroy Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi

Review:
I read Unravel Me before reading Destroy Me and honestly I feel like the novella didn't add anything more to the story.

Destroy Me is written from Warner's perspective and we get to explore more of his thoughts and feelings regarding both Juliette and his father.

While it was interesting to read something from Warner's POV, he is my favorite character in the series, I didn't feel like I got to know him any better and I don't feel that his thoughts justified his actions in Shatter Me.

Overall, despite being a Warner fan I didn't enjoy this novella, it was simple and at times I felt like I was just re-reading what happened in Shatter me, if you're in doubt I would skip it.

The Transfer
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: September 3, 2013

Review:
I still haven't read Allegiant so please no spoilers in the comments. I'm actually reading these Four novella's from my library so that I can keep putting off reading Allegiant. I know eventually this will stop working but hopefully by that point I'll be ready to tackle the series finale.

The Transfer novella follows Tobias before his choosing ceremony and  through his transfer to Dauntless. It was interesting to read something from Four's point of view and to find out more about his life with his abusive father. I also like watching Tobias receive his "Four" nickname.

Overall, I enjoyed this novella and plan on reading the other three in this series. It isn't a necessary read but I like Four enough that reading from his perspective is interesting and I like seeing what Dauntless was like prior to the events in Divergent.

  1. I'm putting off reading Allegiant too, but I'm not taking steps like you are, just hiding the book out of sight :) I can't explain why I'm so scared of reading the last book, it's just HOLY MAMA THE LAST BOOK. How am I supposed to deal with this?!

Well, since the Four divergent collection short stories are now bound in one hardcopy, I might read that just so, you know, delay Allegiant. Also, it's FOUR and I'll read anything about him.

  3. I've read the last two books, and I totally agree with your thoughts. I liked reading from Four's POV. Tris views him as a god, so it's quite different reading of him in a more different and personal light. Awesome reviews!

  4. I have read Destroy Me and The Transfer. I love Warner and reading this before Unravel Me, helped to humanize in the story for me. Love these novella reviews!
