10 Book Cover Trends I Like/Dislike

Like: Typography
I love different kinds of type and covers that are exclusively type. They just look so clean and pretty.

1 Ruin & Rising by Leigh Bardugo
2 Dark Eyes by William Richter

3 Killer Instinct by SE Green
4 The Loop by Shandy Lawson
5 Rush by Eve Silver

Dislike: Creepy People On The Cover
I don't know what it is but when there is a person on the cover of a book that looks too realistic it kind of creeps me out. Unfortunately this looks like a trend that isn't disappearing any time soon.

6 The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead
7 Requiem by Lauren Oliver

8 Take Me On by Katie McGarry
9 The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa
10 Thornhill by Kathleen Peacock

While people on the cover can easily go horribly wrong it can also go totally right, like Winger by Andrew Smith.

  2. I didn't think to add that, but I enjoy cool fonts too.

  3. Creepy people could ruin a book cover for me, too Requiem is one of the worst out there. I liked the cover of The Indigo Spell but the Fiery Heart has such horrible people on it...

  4. Creepy people on book covers tho! Ive avoided buying some books - or bought other copies of the same book with new coverart because some are just too much to handle.

  5. Fonts... I didn't even think about that when making my list! Good choice. There are some really good examples of amazing typography on book covers.

  6. I really do agree w/ you. When I saw the glossy wrapping on Take Me On I thought okay. Then I took it off to see the hardcover completely. . . creepy. Random people on covers just creep me out . . . especially the old Uglies covers. On a positive note, Dark Eyes does have nice font. Small things make a world of a difference!

  7. I like pictures of nature, just in general. Terrible books with, like, trees on the cover are deceitful and manipulative, and I'm often tricked into reading it. Bad.

  8. Bahaha, creepy people! That's just great. People either work on a cover, or they don't. The Vampire Academy and Bloodlines novels--especially the latter--do not work. And yes to pretty typography!

  9. I agree with the fonts--they can make or break a cover. And I really do not like the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines covers. At all.

  10. Putting Take Me On in the creepy people - clarified for me why I always felt something was off with this cover. It looks like that guy is a total abuser - more verbal than physical ... but yeah, creepy fits.
