WHEN I’M WITH YOU vs Jane Austen
By Cecilia Gray

Ack, I just had a flashback to sophomore English class and my palms are sweaty. Here goes…

First and foremost, Mansfield Park is a total classic, and as much as I love my book, WHEN I'M WITH YOU is not. But I think it trumps the original in a few ways…

The Characters
WHEN I'M WITH YOU Kat Morley = Northanger Abbey Catherine Morland.
Both are spirited and overly imaginative. Kat shows more skin. Oh, and she can drive. Suck it, Catherine.

WHEN I'M WITH YOU Henry Trenton = Northanger Abbey Henry Tilney.
Both are confident, mature love interests, but my Henry is a movie star instead of a clergyman…so…there's that.

The Mystery
In the second half of the novel, Kat/Catherine finds herself in Henry's home (pause for moment of squee – omg Kat's spending the night with a movie star) and begins to suspect his father of unsavory activities.

In my book, that activity is adultery. In Jane Austen's book, it's murder.

The Girl-on-Girl Relationships
Jane Austen is famous for writing amazingly relatable heroines, but she also writes a few awful, insensible or just plain ridiculous heroines. In Mansfield Park, Kat/Catherine is led astray and betrayed by Izzy/Isabelle, and their relationship never recovers. In WHEN I'M WITH YOU, I wanted redemption for Izzy.
In fact, I want redemption for all my female characters! I know mean girls exist, but I'm an optimist and like to think that beneath every mean girl is a friend waiting to happen.

Author Bio
Cecilia Gray lives in Oakland where she reads, writes and breaks for food. She also pens her biographies in the third person. Like this. As if to trick you into thinking someone else wrote it because she is important. Alas, this is not the case. Cecilia has been praised for "instilling a warmth and weight into her characters" (Romancing The Book Reviews) and her books have been praised for being "well-written, original, realistic and witty" (Quills & Zebras Reviews). Her latest series of young-adult contemporary Jane Austen retellings was named a What's Hot pick (RT Book Reviews magazine) and is a Best of 2012 pick (Kirkus Reviews) where it was praised for being a "unique twist on a classic" and offering "a compelling mix of action, drama and love."
