Review:
The Lost Prince follows Ethan Chase, Meghan’s younger
brother, as he is forced to enter the world of the fey. Ethan has spent his
life, since Meghan left to be the Iron Queen, avoiding all things fey and
hating that entire world. When mysterious ghost-like fey start killing exiles
and kidnapping half-bloods Ethan reluctantly visits the NeverNever to stop them
but finds more then he bargained for.
I was honestly surprised at how bitter Ethan was. I kind of
expected the happy-go-lucky younger brother we saw in The Iron King to be our
narrator. Instead Ethan is a very grown up, angsty, and has spent most of his
life pushing people away. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed having
Ethan as the main character. He was so different from Meghan and Ash. It really
shows Kagawa’s versatility as a writer that she can write multiple books set in
the same world, voiced by three different characters and have all of those
characters come across as separate and distinct.
I found myself easily drawn into this book, it was nice to
return to a world I was familiar with and have a new cast of characters greet
me. It was also really fun to see the small appearances of Meghan, Ash, and
Puck and to see how much they have grown up. I actually wish they had played a
bigger role but this is the start of the series so hopefully we will get to see
more of them in the future! I would really love for Puck to get his happy
ending.
Speaking of happy endings I loved the slow building romance
between Ethan and Kenzie in this novel! Ethan who is so used to being alone
kept pushing Kenzie away, which at times was infuriating, but Kenzie is so
strong and independent that she wouldn’t take any of Ethan’s crap. I liked that
about her, it actually reminded me a lot of Meghan. Even though Kenzie didn’t
have the ability to see the fey and she is human she still fought right
alongside Ethan and really held her own.
I also feel like I need to mention Keirran but when it comes
to him I’m not entirely sure what to say. I wasn’t really able to get a good
feel for him as a character and I didn’t understand his feelings for an exiled
summer fey (their relationship wasn’t really explained, except for how they
met). Keirran just seemed like an enigma with no real back story. I am sure in
future books Kagawa will further flesh him out but in this book while he was a
main character I didn’t feel any connection with him and I really wanted to
given who he is!
Overall, I enjoyed this novel while it was set in the world
Kagawa created in the Iron Fey series it felt original and Ethan really added a
fresh breath of life to the series. I am excited to see where the story goes
from here and will definitely be picking up the next book in the Call of the
Forgotten Series!
Thank you Negalley and Harlequin Teen for allowing me to read an
Advance Readers Copy of The Lost Prince.
I loved reading about Ethan. His POV is so different from Meghan's! I can't really blame him for being so angsty, especially after all he's been through in the Nevernever. Great review! :)
